What's hot

Canon and Nikon's unchanged battery shapes are a buying spec. Fstoppers makes the case that the least-reviewed line on a spec sheet is the battery designation. The LP-E6 shell Canon shipped with the EOS 5D Mark II in 2008 still fits bodies on sale now, and Nikon's EN-EL15, announced with the D7000 on 15 September 2010, spans F-mount DSLRs and Z bodies on one charger. The catch is that both makers publish compatibility tables that quietly demote older packs: on the R5 Mark II the original LP-E6 is listed as unusable, and LP-E6NH and LP-E6N packs lose features.

If you shoot weekends with a drawer of spares, this is the hidden cost of switching systems — Sony and Fujifilm both changed form factor and made owners rebuy everything on upgrade day. Canon lists the LP-E6P at $79.99, so four spares come to $319.96 before a second charger; R5 Mark II firmware 1.0.2, from December 2024, restored 24p recording on the older NH and N packs. Fstoppers

New gear

  • Thypoch Simera-C 100mm T1.9 — completes a seven-lens full-frame cine prime family running 16mm to 100mm, with a 16-blade iris, 0.85m close focus and 11 elements in 8 groups. These are manual-focus primes you can happily shoot stills with, and the Leica M version mounts on Sony, Canon, Fujifilm, Lumix and DJI bodies via Thypoch's adapters. Announced 23 October, shipping late October at US$879 in Sony E and US$959 in Leica M; 477 g with the E mount. Photo Rumors

  • ZY Optics AF 35mm f/1.4 — is the first autofocus lens from a maker known for manual-focus oddities, and Photo Rumors says it will be announced on 25 October at around $450. Neither the price nor the date is confirmed by ZY Optics itself. A fast 35mm at that money lands squarely on Viltrox and Sirui territory, so it is one to watch if you have been holding out for a cheap wide-normal prime. Sample frames from the lens are already circulating; mounts have not been stated. Photo Rumors

What people are saying

  • Sigma fp II — got taken to Iceland by Christopher Frost alongside the original fp, and the partially stacked sensor leaves behind the skewed verticals that dogged the first two bodies, with only slight tilt on fast pans. It is still $2,199 body-only for a camera with no mechanical shutter, no in-body stabilisation and no Wi-Fi, so the question is whether the size and the video toolset carry it. Two batteries gave about 1,500 frames plus footage in cold weather; 70 GB internal storage, 6K open gate, 20 fps stills. Fstoppers

“Without a mechanical shutter, both the fp and the Sigma fp L showed heavy rolling shutter in stills whenever the camera moved fast”

  • TTArtisan 24mm f/3.8 Mini AF — is a $99 autofocus pancake that follows the Viltrox AF 28mm f/4.5 Chip design almost line for line; Arthur R shot both on a Sony a7 IV. It is the cheapest way to make a body you already own behave like a pocketable fixed-lens compact, instead of buying an X100-style camera. The TTArtisan vignettes less and focuses more responsively, the Viltrox feels better built; both have fixed apertures and USB-C for firmware updates. Fstoppers

  • Nikon Z 20mm f/1.8 S — gets revisited by Dustin Abbott, who finds flare resistance and chromatic aberration control still excellent, and almost no native competition at this focal length and aperture on Z mount. If you shoot night skies or interiors at weekends, this is the lens the system basically forces on you — and it is big, at 505 g with 77mm filters. Abbott puts list price at $1,146; nine blades give 18-point sunstars, and vignetting wide open is heavy enough that he maxes the correction sliders. Fstoppers

  • Why the second-biggest camera brand gets the least affection. Gavin Stoker argues on Digital Camera World that Sony's sales and sensor dominance have not bought it loyalty, pointing at utilitarian industrial design and heritage acquired rather than built — Sony bought Konica Minolta's imaging arm in 2006. Useful to weigh if you are comparing an Alpha body against Fujifilm or Nikon: capability and warmth of ownership are being judged separately here. Sony holds over 50% sensor market share and shipped the first full-frame mirrorless cameras, the A7 and A7R, in 2013. Digital Camera World

“Sony feels more like a brand to admire and less like a brand to love.”

Industry news

  • Nikkor Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S — Nikon Rumors now puts the unconfirmed US price at $13,999, with Europe possibly at 16,000 euros; announcement is still rumoured for 29 October.

  • Meike AF 85mm f/1.8 for GFX — Meike is giving FujiRumors readers $30 off with code FUJI, and has 65mm f/1.4 and 110mm f/1.8 autofocus G-mount lenses still to come.

  • Storyblocks surveys — Two-thirds of content buyers rate human-made work higher, yet 87 percent used AI content in the past year and half have rejected stock for being AI-generated.

One takeaway

Spend $99 on a pancake before buying a second small camera. The fixed-aperture autofocus pancakes from TTArtisan and Viltrox cost less than a filter and turn a body you own into something close to a fixed-lens compact. On APS-C the TTArtisan 24mm gives roughly a 36mm full-frame view, the classic street focal length, and f/3.8 keeps most of a street scene usable without you thinking about depth of field.

A month of carrying that combination tells you whether you actually want an X100-class camera. Both lenses take firmware updates over USB-C. Fstoppers
